Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear answers about ecoWise, our platform, and how we support clean energy projects.

How does ecoWise operate as an agnostic platform?

ecoWise operates as an agnostic platform, leveraging both D-RECs and carbon credits to optimize financial rewards for solar developers. By using an automated, API-driven system, ecoWise selects the highest-value financial option available for each developer, ensuring the most efficient and financially rewarding outcomes. This approach helps make solar energy more affordable for end users. We are currently starting with RECs but are planning to expand to other financial mechanisms as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting clean energy projects.

How does ecoWise ensure transparency, accountability, and equitable impact?

We have established a comprehensive framework for monitoring and verifying that climate finance funds are used appropriately by project developers. This framework is called the ecoWise Impact Assurance Protocol (eIAP), and it covers key areas: financial governance, legal compliance, social responsibility, and environmental impact measurement.

This holistic framework goes beyond commodity monetization to support end-to-endproject integration, from hardware deployment to developer onboarding, data collection, verification, and commodity sales.
This positions ecoWise to:
  • Accelerate mini-grid rollouts.
  • Lower developer financing risks.
  • Simplify participation in both voluntary and compliance carbon markets.

What is ecoWise’s role in the Article 6.2 ecosystem?

ecoWise is uniquely positioned to support Nigeria and other African countries in preparing for and participating in the regulated international carbon market enabled by Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. While the compliance market continues to take shape, ecoWise advocates for a hybrid strategy: serve today’s voluntary market while aligning developer data with future compliance requirements.

ecoWise will continue its services as the MRV and commodity generation platform for small scale renewable energy projects and in turn provide national digital MRV infrastructure and support traceability under an official registry.

How can environmental commodities align with specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

Environmental commodities are generated from solar mini grids often deployed in rural areas, schools, clinics, and small businesses. Each commodity reflects a measurable social and environmental impact. By sourcing environmental commodities, organizations can align their energy procurement with targeted SDGs, ensuring their sustainability investments directly support the communities and outcomes they care about.

Which countries do you source distributed renewable energy from?

ecoWise currently sources distributed renewable energy from countries across Africa, where the disparity in access to energy is most pronounced. Please get in touch to find out more.

Is there a minimum energy demand required to partner with you?

No, we welcome partners of all sizes, there is no minimum energy demand needed to work with us.

Is ecoWise hardware necessary?

Yes, ecoWise hardware is essential to ensure tamper-proof, verifiable carbon credits and RECs. Traditional API/inverter systems are easily manipulated (e.g., fake solar inputs, firmware hacks), leading to fraudulent certificates. ecoWise's pre-inverter hardware, combined with AI, blockchain, and GIS, ensures only real, unaltered solar data is recorded realtime and provides the framework for the finance.

ecoWise delivers the trust, integrity, and compliance needed for credible carbon markets. It's not optional; it's the new standard for environmental commodityverification.

Is there a minimum or maximum project size?

We don’t impose strict size limits, but we prioritise projects between 5 kWp and 5 MWp in nameplate capacity.

What types of projects are eligible?

We focus on new and existing projects. We also love new, unbuilt projects that demonstrate additionality where carbon credit purchases help make the project viable and generate new social or climate benefits.

Do projects need to be off-grid?

No. Both grid-tied and off-grid projects are eligible. Priority goes to those with greater social and environmental impact.

What qualifies as a “high-impact” project?

We assess:
  • Climate impact – by measuring displaced fuel sources and reduced emissions.
  • Social impact – based on alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Projects that go beyond SDG 7 (clean energy) and SDG 13 (climate action) are preferred — e.g., mini-grids powering schools or clinics in underserved areas.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To qualify, developers must:
  • Hold legal rights to monetize the project’s environmental attributes.
  • Provide daily energy generation data through our ecoWise device as applicable or our virtual hardware option
  • For rural or low connectivity regions, we offer flexible data solutions.

How are payments handled?

We generate certificates based on power data and typically process payments in two weeks . For new builds, we’re exploring pre-payment options to support upfront financing through ecoWise finance.

How are pricing and contract terms set?

Pricing and contract length vary by project type and impact level. In general, we offer 5–10 year contracts on ecoWise platforms. Higher-impact projects command higher prices for instance, a rural mini-grid will earn more than a rooftop C&I installation.

How is pricing determined?

REC and carbon credit prices vary by geography, project size, and impact—typically ranging from $5 to $30+ per MWh, $25 per tcCO2e.

Do you buy RECs or carbon credits from past generation (historical data)?

No, we only purchase certificates from new and ongoing generation.

How is generation data collected?

We use our patented ecoWise device which is installed within the solar project or a virtual option which involves API integrations with remote monitoring systems.

When do payments happen?

Payments are made every two weeks, after generation data is verified.

What’s the contract length?

Contracts are project-specific and range from 1 to 15 years, depending on project type and buyer needs.

What’s the difference between a REC and a carbon credit?

  • A REC represents 1 MWh of renewable energy generated.
  • A carbon credit equals 1 ton of CO₂ emissions avoided or removed.
  • RECs show renewable energy use; carbon credits offset emissions.

Can I sell both RECs and carbon credits from one project?

No. You can’t monetise the same environmental impact twice. Choose either RECs or carbon credits to avoid double-counting. ecoWise is currently working with RECs

Who buys the environmental commodities, and why?

We partner with global companies like British Airways, who purchase RECs or carbon credits to meet climate goals and ESG reporting standards. Your project helps them meet clean energy commitments while funding more impact on the ground.
